Women available: Vietnamese women trafficked to China
Lao Cai (Vietnam) (AFP) - When Kiab turned 16, her brother promised to take her to a party in a tourist area in northern Vietnam. He offered her as a bride to a Chinese family.
The ethnic Hmong teenager spent almost a month in China until she could avoid her new partner, find help from local authorities and return to Vietnam.
"my cousin is no more a human being within my eyes -- he sold his own cousin to China," Kiab, whose name has been altered to safeguard her personality, told AFP in a refuge for trafficking victims within the Vietnamese bordertown Lao Cai.
Weak women in countries near to China -- not just Vietnam but Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and also North Korea -- are now being pushed into partnerships within the area of the main one-child coverage, experts say.
China is suffering from among the worst gender imbalances in the world as households prefer male children.
Because of this countless men today cannot locate Asian brides -- a key driver of trafficking, based on rights groups.
The Lao Cai pound currently houses several females from various ethnic minority groups. All state relatives, friends or men deceived them and offered to Chinese men as women.
"I had seen a lot about trafficking. But I couldn't imagine it'd occur to me," Kiab said.

Vietnamese women can be purchased for up to $5,000 as brides or to brothels, said Michael Brosowski, creator and CEO of Blue Dragon Kids' Foundation, which has recovered 71 trafficked women from China since 2007.
" people trick girls offering jobs, or posing as men. Those individuals do a shortage of human sympathy as well as this quite intentionally, and for nothing aside from greed," he added.
It's likely that lots of the girls end-up in brothels, but because of the judgment to be a sex-worker they will often record these were forced into marriage.
Communist neighbours Vietnam and China reveal a mountainous, remote line extending 1,350 kilometers, designated primarily by the Nam Thi water and rife with smuggling of products of all types: live poultry, fruit and women.
"It is mostly women who reside in remote and mountainous regions who're being trafficked over the line, since there is no data for people," said 18-year-old Lang, in the Tay ethnic minority, who walked across the frontier illegally and was offered into a Chinese family with a friend.
In northern Vietnam, trafficking is becoming so acute that areas claim they're living in fear.
"I worry much about it, as do most of the parents in the neighborhoods, but it has occurred to your large amount of women already," said a community elder in the Red Dao ethnic minority group, Phan Pa May.
"I've one daughter. She is currently married, but I am worried about my granddaughter. We always ask where she's planning, and tell her not to talk on the trust or phone anyone."

"There's nothing at home for these women, not enough food to consume," said director Nguyen Tuong Long, discussing the dire poverty that's another key driver.The shelter in Lao Cai has helped scores of female subjects and opened this season.
Activists trying to combat trafficking in Vietnam said authorities and authorities consider the problem " seriously ".
May Na, from the Hmong ethnic community, was 13 when her dad pushed her to marry a Chinese man and took her throughout the border.
"I could not accept it. That I climbed within the wall and they left me in the home and went away. I had been walking for greater than a day, dropped, resting inside the streets, crying," she said.
Ultimately, Na ended up in a police station, but since she spoke Chinese or Vietnamese -- just her native Hmong -- it got police per month return her to Vietnam and to find out what had happened.
Currently 16, Na -- the oldest of five kids -- is learning Vietnamese in the Lao Cai heart. She's chosen to not return to her own family, although her uncle has been charged, she said.
The government says it's released education programmes in rural areas, near the line, caution young girls to not trust outsiders.
Long, the center director, says he considers the amount of cases is falling.
In neighbouring Cambodia, there were some prosecutions, but An Sam Ath of rights group Licadho said the scourge remains occurring, adding: "I am worried the problem will spread."
Anti-trafficking groups in Vietnam claim it is hard to warn ladies of the hazards if it is generally pal or a family member finishing up the deception.
They say there should be harsher penalties for traffickers -- including, for example, prosecutions at regional level to boost awareness in communities of potential punishments from trying to deter people
